Refrigerants and Cooling Fluids Information on the refrigerants and process cooling fluids used in Affinity Brand thermal control units can be accessed and downloaded from this page, for your convenience.
Cooling Fluids Our products can be designed to work with a very wide variety of fluids. Water is of course the best fluid for heat transfer, however it does have a limited temperature range, and can carry ions, minerals and support algae or bacteria which can cause problems. Algaecides, such as Chloramin-T are compatible with all of our units that use Water and the use of this additive can greatly reduce the chance of Algae blooms. We offer a wide variety of filtration systems as accessories to purify the water. Please call for details. For temperatures below freezing, glycol may be added to water to offer a safe, inexpensive fluid. Car antifreeze should never be used as the suspended silicate particles designed to prevent corrosion in aluminum engine blocks will destroy pump seals. A laboratory grade Ethylene Glycol or Propylene Glycol an be used. Please refer to the manufacturers instructions for concentration. Deionization. When dissimilar metals are immersed in water, a galvanic reaction can take place which will cause corrosion and add ions of the weaker metals in the water path. To control this, we offer deionization packages that can be build onto the chillers. These pre-packaged systems are designed to maintain the waters resistivity between 1 and 3 megohm/cm. At this range, galvanic corrosion is controlled, and your instrumentation as well as your chiller/heat exchanger are protected from corrosion. Pure 18 megohm/cm water is never recommended as it is very aggressive to units and instruments construction of dissimilar metals. HFE fluids, sold under the brands Flourinert (3M) and Galden (Ausimont) are di-electric fluids that are compatible with chillers and heat exchangers that are custom build for their use. They are very dense in nature and the re-circulating pumps have to be properly sized to handle the weight of the fluid. A sealed chiller design is also recommended to prevent evaporation or hydration (absorbing moisture from atmosphere). For other fluids, or help with the choices listed above, please contact our inside sales department to talk to an applications engineer. 1(800) 238-8581 or (603) 539-3600.![]() |
